The Rochester, Minnesota native was a standout in his four seasons at the University of Wisconsin. In his freshman year, Johannson was selected to play for the U.S. at the 1981 World Junior Championships. Although the squad settled for sixth place, Johannson scored a goal in an emotional 7-3 win over Canada.

The young forward was selected 192nd overall by the Colorado Rockies in the 1981 Entry Draft. He later recorded consecutive 20-goal seasons in 1982 and 1983 and was a member of two NCAA championship teams. Johannson didn't record a point in his five game trial with the Devils. The next season he was a scoring star for the Austrian club WEV Wien before retiring.
