Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gerry Heffernan
Right-winger Gerry Heffernan played parts of three seasons with the Montreal Canadiens in the early 40s. He was a fine goal scorer with good speed and earned many accolades in senior hockey circles.

The Montreal native played junior hockey with the home town Royals for two years. He then graduated to the Royals seniors where he played for four years. Intermixed with his tenure with the senior Royals was a year spent with the Harringay Greyhounds in Britain in 1937-38.

Heffernan enjoyed a solid rookie season with the Habs in 1941-42 and was one of their best players during the quarterfinal loss to the Detroit Red Wings. He played most of the next years with the senior Royals before he was recalled for the semifinal setback at the hands of the Boston Bruins. In 1943-44 Heffernan scored 28 goals and worked effectively on a line with Buddy O'Connor and Fern Majeau. He capped off his year by helping Montreal sweep the Chicago Black Hawks to win the Stanley Cup. By the mid-40s, the Habs were rebuilding and receiving players back from World War II. Heffernan played two more years with the Royals before retiring in 1946.
