Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Anders Hakansson
Although drafted by St. Louis in 1976, Anders Hakansson never appeared in a Blues sweater. He played in Sweden for the next five years, appearing on the Swedish national team twice and representing his homeland in the World Championships.

He signed as a free agent with Minnesota in 1981. Although he wanted to play in the NHL, he had what he felt was a good situation in Sweden--the opportunity to play hockey and pursue an engineering degree--and he didn't want to sign with just any NHL team. He was happy with what he learned about the North Stars, and he went on to play 77 games for them. He was traded to Pittsburgh along with Ron Meighan and Minnesota's 1983 first-round draft choice for George Ferguson and the Penguin's 1983 first-round draft choice in October 1982.

After 62 games in a Pittsburgh sweater, he was sent to the L.A. Kings for the rights to Kevin Stevens in September 1983. During his time with the Kings, he proved to be quite a bargain, playing all three forward positions and proving to be a solid team player and steadying influence in the dressing room. Sidelined for much of the 1985-86 season, Hakansson decided to retire rather than report to the minors. Having never played in the minors in his career, and being less than a year away from a civil engineering degree in his homeland, Hakansson left the NHL with no recriminations and went back to Sweden to finish his education.
