Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Richard Grenier
Centre Richard Grenier played ten games for the New York Islanders in 1972-73. He attained a fair bit of success in the WHA, minor leagues and Europe where he was a consistent offensive threat.

The Montreal native played junior with the Quebec Remparts and Verdun Maple Leafs. He was taken 65th overall by the New York Islanders at the 1972 Amateur Draft as they prepared for their inaugural season. Grenier didn't look out of place during a ten game trial with the club but was relegated to the New Haven Nighthawks of the AHL to gain confidence and work on his consistency.

Following his brief exposure to the NHL, the talented pivot played a few games for the WHA's Quebec Nordiques in 1976-77 but otherwise remained in the minors through the early stages of the 1979-80 season. In 1975-76 he scored 77 goals in 73 games for the Beauce Jaros of the North American League and was a first team all-star. Two years later he led the AHL with 46 goals as a member of the Binghamton Whalers.

Part way through the 1979-80 schedule, Grenier decided to give Europe a try. He scored 103 points in 34 games for Austria's Feldkirch and later played in Finland and Switzerland before returning to the Osterreich League. In 1981-82 he led the Swiss League with 40 goals in 36 matches while helping EHC Arosa win the championship. Grenier retired in 1989 after playing two years with WEV Wiener based in the Austrian capital.
