Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gus Giesebrecht
Gus Giesebrecht was a clever offensive centre who spent four years with the Detroit Red Wings in the 30s and 40s. Most of his success came in various senior leagues where he toiled for many years.

Born in Pembroke, Ontario, Giesebrecht played junior with the local Lumber Kings and the St. Malachy's and Senators clubs of Ottawa. He then spent two years developing with the EHL's Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets and the Detroit Pontiacs of the MOHL.

In 1938-39, Giesebrecht made an impressive NHL debut with 20 points in 28 games for Detroit. He also looked solid during the club's playoff drive to the semifinals. The hard-working pivot spent three more years in Motown and helped the Wings reach the Stanley Cup final in 1941. During this period he often formed a solid line with Mud Bruneteau and Syd Howe.

Following his NHL tenure, Gisebrecht spent time with the senior Ottawa Canadians and Kingston Frontenacs before entering military service in 1944. After World War II he returned home to the senior Lumber Kings of the Ottawa Valley senior circuit. He remained with the club when it joined the Eastern Canada senior loop and was one of the top scorers in the league before he retired in 1952.
