Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Bill Gardner
Bill Gardner enjoyed three successful seasons in junior hockey, playing for the Peterborough Petes of the OHA in the late 1970s. In each of his three seasons with the Petes, the club captured the Ontario championship and represented the OHA at the Memorial Cup. In the 1978 finals they lost to the defending champion New Westminster Bruins of the WHL. They returned the following year and scored a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings in the final. The Petes returned to the Cup for the third year in a row in 1980, but lost 3-2 in overtime in the finals against a strong club from Cornwall, representing the QMJHL with the likes of 17-year-old Dale Hawerchuk leading the charge.

Gardner was selected in the third round, 49th overall in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. He turned pro in 1980-81, spending most of the season with the New Brunswick Hawks of the AHL although he was called up for his first NHL game with Chicago that year.

Gardner held down a regular roster spot in Chicago for close to five years before being traded to the Hartford Whalers in February, 1986. The experiment lasted 50 games before he decided to re-sign with Chicago in September, 1987 although he played just another eight games with the team over two seasons.

In the fall of 1989 Gardner moved to Austria where he played for four years. He finished off his playing career in Germany in 1992-93 with EV Landshut.
