Boyd Kane was born April 18, 1978 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the third round, 72nd overall in 1996, Kane is a graduate of the WHL's Regina Pats.
Following a four-year career in Regina, Kane joined the New York Rangers AHL affiliate in Hartford after he was selected by the parent club in the fourth round, 114th overall at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Kane re-entered the draft after the Penguins and Kane failed to reach a contract agreement.
Upon his arrival with the New York organization, Kane split his first two seasons with the AHL's Hartford WolfPack, the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers and the UHL's B.C. Icemen. In 2000-01, Kane became a permanent fixture in Hartford and went to play two more seasons with the team before playing one season with the AHLs Springfield Falcons. Following one season in Springfield, the Swift Current, Saskatchewan native signed as a free-agent with the Philadelphia Flyers in the summer of 2003. Upon his arrival with the Flyers, Kane went on to spend the majority of the season with the club's AHL affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms while seeing action in seven games with the parent club.
In 2004-05, Kane led the Phantoms to the Calder Cup title before having his rights acquired by the Washington Capitals in the summer of 2005.
Kane would spend the majority of the 2005-06 with the Capitals AHL affiliate in Hershey where he would once again capture the Calder Cup. Following his stint with Washington, Boyd returned to the Philadelphia Flyer organization after signing on as a free agent in the summer of 2006.
