Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Roland Eriksson
Like so many other Swedes of his generation, Eriksson was drafted by Minnesota because the rest of the league had been impressed and worried by Toronto's signing of Borje Salming and Inge Mahharstrom. A tall, sleek centre in the style of Jean Beliveau, he played for Sweden at the inaugural and invitational World Junior Championships in 1974. He later played in the 1976 Canada Cup and led Tre Kronor to a silver medal at the 1977 World Championship, even scoring all three goals in a crucial 3-1 win over the Soviets. In his first NHL game, in '76-'77, Eriksson tied an NHL record with four points, and although he didn't win the Calder Trophy he tied for most points by a rookie that year with 69. The following year his performance dropped as he faced greater checking and heavier hitting, and the year after his career spiraled downward. The Stars released him, he signed with Vancouver, the Canucks released him, and he joined Winnipeg in the WHA. The year after, '79-'80, he returned home to play in Sweden and later Germany until 1986.
