Dave Donnelly's name is certainly more synonymous with the Canadian National hockey team than his NHL exploits, but he did nonetheless play five seasons and a total of 137 league games.

Donnelly, a second round draft pick of the Minnesota North Stars, 27th overall in the 1981 Entry Draft, never actually played for the Stars but he did play with three other NHL clubs.

In 1981-82 Donnelly played NCAA hockey at the University of North Dakota. In 38 games he compiled ten goals and 15 assists for 25 points. He followed that up with a 34-game season in 1982-83, scoring 18 goals and 16 assists for 34 points.

Donnelly played 16 games in the NHL during the 1983-84 season, scoring three goals and four assists. The bulk of his season was played with the Canadian national squad. Donnelly played 71 games, had 18 goals and 14 assists. He was also a member of the Olympic team that played in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.

In 1984-85, Donnelly returned to the Bruins where he suited up for 38 games, scoring six goals and eight assists. Donnelly's only full season of NHL action came in 1986-87 when, as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, he played in 71 games, scoring six goals and 12 assists. In 1987-88, he was a member of the Edmonton Oilers, playing four games with them, but he did not dress for any of their playoff games en route to their second consecutive Stanley Cup championship.

Donnelly continued to play pro hockey until the age of 30, and last played competitively with the Canadian national team in 1991-92.
