Born in London, Ontario on the 2nd of January 2nd 1963 Neal Coulter played his junior hockey with the Toronto Marlboros. Coulter graduated from the Marlboros to the Indianapolis Checkers in 1983, with whom he spent the bulk of the next two seasons. During the 1985-86 season, a year he spent primarily with the Springfield Indians, Coulter got the call from the Islanders and made his NHL debut.

Coulter played 16 contests with the Islanders firing in three goals from the right wing and adding four assists. The next year Coulter played 9 more games for New York and added three more points to his totals. During the 1987-88 season Coulter played his final NHL game suiting up for one game in which he was held off the scoresheet. The rest of that campaign was spent back in the American Hockey League with Springfield. Coulter retired at the end of the season and left hockey.
