Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gary Coalter
Gary Coalter, born June 8th, 1950 in Toronto, Ontario, was a 5th round draft pick of the New York Rangers in the 1970 Amateur Draft. The majority of Coalter's first three professional seasons were spent with the Omaha Knights, two of which the team won the league championship. After his third season he found his career taking a different direction when the Rangers traded Coalter to the California Golden Seals in May of 1973.

With the Golden Seals Coalter got his chance and made his NHL debut. In four games the right winger was held off the scoresheet. In the summer of 1974 the National Hockey League added a franchise in Kansas City. The Kansas City Scouts plucked Coalter from the Seals in the Expansion Draft and Coalter was granted an opportunity to get more ice time.

Coalter played 30 games with the Scouts, scoring 2 goals and six points. The following year Coalter spent with the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League, then a year with the Maine Nordiques before starting a two year run with the Philadelphia Firebirds of the AHL. After his second year in Philadelphia, Coalter retired from professional hockey.

Coalter worked in construction following his retirement, but the Coalter name would resurface in the hockey world. His son, Brandon Coalter was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in 1998.
