Carruthers played junior in Saskatchewan in the 1960s and became Red Wings property. From 1965 to 1967 he played primarily minor pro, but the Wings called him up for one game.

In the summer of 1967, he was left exposed in the Expansion Draft and the Flyers claimed him. But the pattern was repeated. Carruthers spent all his time in the minors, with the exception of a one-game callup.

Other than those games, he played mostly for Spokane and almost exclusively in the WHL before retiring in 1976, a two-game veteran on the NHL.
