Forward Mike Byers began his ascent to the NHL playing his major junior hockey with the Toronto Marlboros of the OHA, signing with them and playing in two games as a 17-year-old in 1963-64. The following year Byers was a regular roster player with the Marlies, scoring 21 goals and 42 points in 47 games. As a 20-year-old veteran he had a great final season, scoring 25 goals and 44 points in 41 games and helped guide the Marlboros to the 1967 Memorial Cup championship along with other such future NHL players as Gerry Meehan, Brad Park and Brian Glennie.
