Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Irwin Boyd
When it became apparent teenager Yank Boyd had exceptional hockey skills, he decided to make the move north of the border at the age of 17 to play against other high-skilled players of his age. In 1925-26, Boyd joined the Toronto Canoe Club of the OHA Junior League. In seven games he scored five goals and six points. His strong play earned him a two-game stint with the Senior club and there he scored three goals, impressing virtually everyone associated with the team.

In 1926-27, Boyd played four games with the Toronto Marlboros of the OHA. After two more years playing hockey in Toronto, he joined the Boston Tigers of the Can-Am league in 1929-30. In 40 games, he scored 24 goals and 36 points. He followed that up with a 31-point effort the next year.

The Boston Bruins of the NHL signed Boyd as a free agent and he appeared in 29 games with them in 1931-32, scoring two goals and an assist. He was traded to the Philadelphia Arrows of the Can-Am league for cash in 1932. In 1934-35, Boyd was back in the NHL as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, starting 42 games and scoring five points. For the next seven years, Boyd played with five different teams in three leagues before once again suiting up in the NHL, returning to Boston where he played 20 games with the Bruins in 1942-43. He played in five games the following year, which was the end of his career in the NHL.

In 96 NHL contests, Boyd collected ten goals and 20 points.
