Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Barry Boughner
Winger Barry Boughner was born in the small town of Delhi, Ontario and played two years of major junior hockey with the OHA's London Nationals. Among some of his more famous junior teammates were the likes of Garry Unger, Darryl Sittler and Jim Dorey. During his first year with the Nationals in 1966-67 Boughner had just one goal in 42 games. In his second season he played in 52 games and managed to find the back of the net on 15 occasions while collecting 34 points, which was a reasonably strong showing considering he was used primarily as a defensive forward.

Despite having a decent all-round game, Boughner was by no means flashy, nor did he possess the type of skills that typically caught the attention of the pro scouts, so it came as no surprise when he was not drafted in 1968. But he loved playing and being just 20, wanted to continue to give hockey a chance. He signed a free-agent contract with Port Huron of the IHL but did not dress for any of the team's games. He asked to be traded and was granted his wish. The Des Moines Oak Leafs picked up his rights and Boughner played 58 games that year, scoring 19 goals and 32 points.

In 1969, the fledgling Oakland Seals were in dire need of defensive help so they offered a contract to Boughner, who readily accepted. He appeared in four games with the hapless Seals but spent the other 71 games that year with Providence of the AHL. By 1970-71 the Seals had gone through an ownership shuffle and the team was renamed the California Golden Seals. Boughner dressed for 16 games with the club that year, but it was clear more than a name change was in order, as the team was still one of the worst in the NHL. Boughner and most of the other members of the Golden Seals were either castoffs from other teams or career minor-leaguers, so it was no surprise that their success was limited in those early years.

Boughner played another four years in the minors. He finished off his career playing in the senior league in Ontario with the Brantford Forresters.
