Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Joe Benoit
An entertaining right winger, Joe Benoit was a member of the Montreal Canadiens, providing the team with a spectacular scoring during the early 1940s. Between 1940 and 1943, Benoit was one of the team's leading point-getters. He made his presence felt in his first season with 16 goals and 16 assists in only 45 games. The following year he recorded 20 goals and 16 assists, then improved to an impressive 30 goals and 27 helpers in 49 games.

Military service prevented him from playing in the NHL during the 1943-44 season. The following year he joined the Calgary Army team in that city's senior league. In 1945-46, Benoit was back with the Canadiens, with whom he played for two more seasons before being sent to the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League during the 1946-47 season. He didn't play the following year and in 1948-49 played one game for the Montreal Royals of the Quebec Senior Hockey League before being appointed to a coaching position with the Spokane Flyers in the Kootenay league.

International hockey fans are most familiar with Benoit as a member of the Trail (British Columbia) Smoke Eaters squad that represented Canada in the World Championships at the end of the 1938-39 season. In seven games during the World tournament, he recorded six goals and three assists for nine points, helping Canada win the gold medal. In the summer of 1940, the Toronto Maple Leafs, who held his professional rights, traded him to the Montreal Canadiens for Frankie Eddolls, who in turn was later traded to Montreal for one of the greatest Leafs of all time, Ted Kennedy.

Prior to joining the Trail club, Benoit, who was born in St. Albert, Alberta, had played junior hockey with the Edmonton Athletics in the city's junior league. He passed away in 1981.
