Robin Bartel was a young defenceman at the University of Saskatchewan when he caught the attention of the coaches putting together Canada's entry for the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics. Bartel played 51 games with the Canadian national team to prepare for the Games and was one of the seven defenders coach Dave King chose to wear the red and white. The Canadians came fourth in Sarajevo and Bartel, undrafted, signed as a free agent with Calgary on the srength of his performance.
He played most of 85-86 in Moncton, though, and managed to get into just one Flames game before being let go. He signed with Vancouver, but in half a season recorded just a single assist. After three more years knocking around in the minors, he rejoined the national team in 1989. His international career continued in Britain with the Medway Bears in 1990 at the end of his hockey career.
