Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Don Ashby
Drafted 6th overall by Toronto in 1975, Ashby was made the number one centre on the team just a few months later thanks to the departure of both Dave Keon and Norm Ullman.

Ashby had a tough rookie season, scoring just six times, and only a slightly more encouraging sophomore session with 19. Demoted each of his first three seasons with Toronto, he quit briefly in 1978 before agreeing to keep going a little longer. Traded to Colorado, then Edmonton, he was sent to the Wichita Wind in the CHL, his NHL days clearly at an end. But he and teammates Don Murdoch and Tom Roulston led the Wind to the Adams Cup final against Salt Lake before losing in seven games.

He and his wife, Terry, drove slowly back home, and just a few days later they were hit head-on by a pick up truck. Ashby died in hospital a few hours later from massive internal injuires.
