If I could be half as good as my dad, I'd be happy, Gerry said of his father the day he signed his first pro contract, with the Detroit Red Wings in the summer of 1965. His dad, the legendary Sid, would have been doubly happy had this happened, partly for his pride as a father, partly because the father was general manager of the Wings!
Such was not to be the case, however. Gerry's only game came March 8, 1967, an uneventful entry and finish to his NHL career. Of note, though, his father was by then coaching the team, and Sid, who played with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay some fifteen years earlier on the Production Line, got to see his son play with that same Howe and newcomer Doug Roberts! After two more seasons in minor pro, Gerry retired, never having realized his dream.
