A graduate of the University of North Dakota, Zombo represented the United States at the 1983 World Junior Hockey Championships and earned WCHA Second Team All Star honours before starting his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings with a one game appearance during the 1984-85 season.
It would be another two seasons before Detroits 6th pick in the 1981 Entry Draft would be promoted to the big club on a full-time basis. Zombo proved to be a good skater with a strong stride and very good balance. When he was traded to the St. Louis Blues early in the 1991-92 season his above average agility and balance had allowed him to focus on becoming a steady, stay-at-home defenceman.
Zombo was traded to the Boston Bruins on October 2, 1995, and after a season with the Bruins he finished his professional career as a member of the Phoenix Roadrunners of the
