In 1987-88, Ed Ward enrolled at Northern Michigan University and played 25 games as a WCHA freshman and he had a successful four-year career.

He was drafted 108th overall in the 1988 Entry Draft by the Québec Nordiques. In 1993-94, he made his NHL debut, played seven games and scored one goal. On March 23, 1995, Ed was traded to the Calgary Flames for Francois Groleau.

In 1991-92, Ed turned pro and played for the ECHL's Greensboro Generals and AHL Halifax Citadels. He had 18 points in his 51 AHL games. In 1992-93, Ed scored 32 points in 70 AHL games with the Citadels. He then joined the Nordiques' new AHL affiliate, the Cornwall Aces, and scored 42 points in 60 games. In 1994-95, he played 56 games with the Aces and then 11 games (nine points) with the Saint John Flames. After playing 12 games with the AHL Flames in 1995-96, he played just one game with the AHL Flames in 1996-97. That year, he also played 31 games (13 points) for the IHL's Detroit Vipers.

On June 25, 1999, Ward was claimed in the Expansion Draft by the Atlanta Thrashers. After 44 games he was traded on March 14 to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for a conditional draft pick. He played eight games down the stretch with the Mighty Ducks. On June 12, 2000, Ward was traded again, to the New Jersey Devils, for a seventh round draft pick. That season, he played just four games with the Devils.

In 2000-01, Ed scored 33 points in 65 games with the Devils.
