Nick Smith was born March 23, 1979 in Hamilton, Ontario. The 3rd choice, 74th overall selection of the Florida Panthers in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Smith is a graduate of the Ontario Hockey League's Barrie Colts.

The Hamilton, Ontario native spent three seasons with the Barrie and had seasons of 28, 34 and 53 points before making his professional debut with the Panthers AHL affiliate in Louisville in 1999-2000. Even though he spent the majority of the season in Louisville, Smith played in two games with the UHL's Port-Huron Border Cats. In his first season of professional hockey with Louisville, Smith played in 53 games scoring eight goals while adding four assists for 12 points before missing the majority of the 2000-01 season with a knee injury.

In 2001-02, Smith played in 15 games with Florida while spending the remainder of the season split between the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers and the Saint-John Flames. Smith joined the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, an Anaheim affiliate, prior to the 2002-03 season.
