Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Mark Vermette
Mark Vermette emerged as a major scoring star in his third season with Lake Superior State University when he scored a circuit-leading 45 goals in just 46 games. Vermette was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award and was named to both the NCAA West All-American Team and the CCHA First All-Star Team. More importantly, though, was the success he helped his team achieve. Vermette's overtime goal against St. Lawrence gave Lake Superior the national title.

Vermette's next challenge was to try to duplicate his scoring success at the NHL level which he attempted to do with the Quebec Nordiques. Vermette turned pro in 1988 with the Nordiques farm club in Halifax but also suited up for 12 games with the big club.

Vermette recorded four assists during his first stay with Quebec and he was back for 11 more games the following year, and managed to score his first goal during that stay. In 1990-91 Vermette enjoyed his longest NHL stint when he played 34 games with the Nordiques and responded with 3 goals and 7 assists. His last crack at NHL employment came the next year when Quebec brought him up for another 10 games and he scored a goal, his last point as a big league player.

The 1992-93 and 1993-94 season were spent entirely in the minors, and while Vermette showed solid offensive skills, he did not get another chance to play in the National Hockey League and left the game.

After retiring as a player, Vermette remained involved with the game when he took the post of general manager with the Soo Indians of the NAJHL.
