Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Stefan Ustorf
Stefan Ustorf joined a small handful of German-born players in the National Hockey League when he joined the Washington Capitals in 1995. Ustorf was already an established player in his homeland with international experience before making the jump to North America. A three-time member of Germany's World Junior team (1991, 1992, 1994), a two-time member of its World Championship team (1992, 1993)and a member of its Olympic Team (1994).

Ustorf spent the 1994-95 season with the Capitals farm club in Portland, and impressed the Washington brass by scoring 21 goals as a rookie. The following year he would play just 8 games with the Portland Pirates as a result of a call up to Washington. With the Capitals Ustorf suited up for 48 games and scored 7 goals and 17 points in that time. Ustorf also saw action in five post-season games that spring. After registering 2 assists in four World Cup games in Septmeber of 1996, Ustorf struggled during his second season with the Capitals. The bulk of the year was spent in the minors with just six scoreless games with Washington to his credit.

After only three years in North America, Ustorf returned to Germany for the 1997-98 season. Ustorf played for the Berlin Capitals and also represented his country at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. In 1998-99, Ustorf came back to North America and signed on with the Detroit Vipers, but after three seasons spent entirely with IHL clubs and no offers from NHL clubs coming his way, the trip back home was inevitable.

Ustorf returned to Germany and signed on with Mannheim Eagles of the German Elite League. In 2002 he made his third appearance for Germany in the Winter Olympics and was part of a club who surprised many with their competitive play. Later that spring, Ustorf made his third appearance at the World Championships and his fourth appearance in 2004, while continuing his career in his homeland.
