John Stevens was selected from the Oshawa Generals in the 1984 Entry Draft by the Flyers, the same draft that saw Mario Lemieux taken first overall. He made his NHL debut in the 1986-87 season but spent the majority of the year with the team's AHL affiliate in Hershey.
After three more seasons in the minors, with only a brief, three-game stint in Philadelphia, Stevens signed with the Hartford Whalers as a free agent looking for a fresh start in 1990. Once again, he spent the majority of his playing time in the minors, playing his last game in the NHL in the 1993-94 season.
Stevens went back to the Flyers in 1996 when he signed as a free agent and played with their AHL team, the Phantoms, until 1999 when he retired from hockey.
In the summer of 2006, the Flyers announced that Stevens would replace Wayne Fleming as one of the teams assistant coaches.
