Born in St. Agathe, Quebec, Ron Stern played three seasons with the QMJHL's Longueuil Chevaliers, leading his team to the 1987 Memorial Cup tournament.

After three successful seasons in Longueuil, Stern split his first season of professional hockey with the IHL's Flint Spirits and the AHL's Fredericton Express while suiting up for the Vancouver Canucks for 15 games.
