Born January 2, 1978, Yuri was chosen by the Colorado Avalanche in the second round of the 1996 Amateur Draft. Moving to North America, Babenko completed his junior eligibility with a season with the OHL Plymouth Whalers in 1997-98 before playing four seasons in the AHL with Colorado's affiliate, the Hershey Bears. During the 2000-2001 season, the avid chess player was called up to the parent Avalanche, getting into 3 games but not registering any points.
