Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Russell Romaniuk
Russ Romaniuk played three years of hockey at the University of North Dakota between 1988 and 1991. It was there that he first showcased his aggressive style and strength in driving towards the net. He had a hard, accurate shot and was adroit at retrieving loose pucks in close quarters. Although he was not a great skater, his above-mentioned skills were used to produce impressive results.

The Winnipeg Jets picked him up in the 1988 Entry Draft. They gave him a 27-game tryout and gradually determined that his abilities in college were not likely to translate into the same degree of effectiveness at the NHL level. As such, his destiny took shape as a career minor leaguer who was just good enough to get a call each year to fill in when needed.

During his four years in the Jets' organization, Romaniuk played for Moncton and Springfield of the AHL as well as Fort Wayne of the IHL and the Canadian National Team. In between appearances, he appeared in a total of 86 games in a Jets' uniform.

In 1995, he was traded to Philadelphia where he started the season with the Hershey Bears of the AHL. True to form, he got a call later in the season to join the Flyers 17 games before the playoffs. During the stint, he scored his final three NHL goals.

In 1996, Romaniuk made a permanent departure from the big leagues to pursue a lengthy and well-traveled career in the minors. Since leaving Philly, he has made stops in Manitoba, Long Beach, Las Vegas, Nurenberg, Germany, and Houston.
