Alexei Vasiliev was born September 1, 1977 in Yaroslavi, Russia. The fifth round, 110th overall selection of the New York Ranges in the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, Vasiliev came to North America in 1998-99 and joined the Rangers AHL affiliate in Hartford.
An offensively gifted defenceman, Vasiliev finished his rookie year with 27 points and was just as impressive in his sophomore year with 38 points and was instrumental in leading the Wolf Pack to a Calder Cup title in 2000. Vasiliev's strong play on the Hartford blue line earned his one game with the parent club during the 1999-00 season.
Vasiliev joined the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals in 2000-01 and spent one season with the team before heading back to Russia the following year as a member of Yaroslavl Lokomotiv.
