Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Patrick Poulin
As a junior, Patrick Poulin had all the ingredients needed for success: size, speed, and offensive skills that made him a star winger with the St. Hyacinthe Laser of the QMJHL.

He was selected 9th overall in the NHL Entry Draft by the Hartford Whalers in 1991. But before he made the jump to the pros, he put in one final season with the Laser where he led the league with 138 points in 56 games.

Poulin played his first complete year with the Whalers in 1992-93, during which time he racked up a career-high 51 points. He appeared to be the offensive spark of his team's future until the Whalers changed course at the start of his second year. They made a reach for older more experienced players in Steve Larmer and Bryan Marchment. Poulin was the necessary collateral in the deal, making the transition to the Chicago Blackhawks.

In Chicago, Poulin performed well during the 1994-95 season, topping off the campaign with 5 points in the playoffs. But from that point on, his production slipped to the level of a journeyman. After a year and a half in the Windy City, Poulin was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning where he was given a more defensive role as a penalty killer. He lasted with the club until 1998 when he was traded to the Montreal Canadiens where he continues to perform as a third-line defensive specialist.
