Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Mike Needham
Right-winger Mike Needham spent parts of three seasons in the NHL during the early 90s. He was a productive offensive player in junior and the minors but was strictly a part-time figure in the big leagues.

The native of Calgary, Alberta, played with the Fort Saskatchewan Traders of the AJHL before moving up to the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL. He scored 155 goals with the Blazers including 59 in 1989-90 when the team won the Memorial Cup. The skilled forward was the Pittsburgh Penguins' 7th choice, 126th overall at the 1989 Entry Draft. He also averaged a point per game for Canada when they won gold at the 1990 World Junior Championships.

Needham began his pro career with the IHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks in 1990-91. The next year he scored 41 goals for the club and helped them finish second in the East Division with 95 points. At the end of the 1991-92 season he joined the Pens for five game during their successful Stanley Cup drive.

Pittsburgh utilized Needham as a fourth liner in 1992-93. He played 56 games and helped the club top the NHL with 119 points before they were upset in the quarterfinals by the New York Islanders. Needham began the 1993-94 season with the Penguins but was eventually sent down to the minors then traded to the Dallas Stars. He was recalled for five games but, over the next two years, he battled injuries while playing in the "I" and the AHL until retiring in 1996.
