Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Mark Kumpel
Mark Kumpel was a hard-working right-winger who played nearly 300 games with three clubs from 1984-85 to 1990-91. He wasn't fancy but his tireless work and unselfish attitude were appreciated wherever he played.

Kumpel played four years at Lowell University in his home state of Massachusetts and scored 36 points in 30 games as a freshman in 1979-80. That summer he was chosen by the Quebec Nordiques 108th overall in the NHL Entry Draft. In 1982 he joined the U.S. national team and scored 65 points in 91 games over two seasons then played at the Sarajevo Olympics in 1984

The energetic forward scored 15 points in 42 games as a rookie in 1984-85 then potted three goals in 18 playoff games as the Nords reached semi-finals. Kumpel played more than half the next two years in Quebec then was traded to Detroit where he battled injuries.

After he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets for Jim Nill in January 1988 Kumpel played a regular shift the rest of the season. For a time, he wasn't able to keep his place in the Jets' speedy line-up. Kumpel spent the 1988-89 schedule with Moncton of the AHL but returned to play the next two years with the Jets. He retired in 1993 after playing one AHL year each with the Moncton Hawks and Providence Bruins.
