Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Herbert Vasiljevs
Latvian center Herbert Vasiljevs came to North America in 1995 and played in the Ontario Hockey League with the Guelph Storm. His point a game production as a Junior player caught the attention of the Florida Panthers who signed him as a free agent. Vasiljevs transition to the professional game was very smooth and quickly established himself as a productive player, scoring 36-goals in just his second season in the minor leagues. In 1998-99, during his third season with the Panther organization, Florida called him for his first taste of NHL action.

In five games with the Panthers Vasiljevs was unable to register a point, and was subsequently traded later that summer with Gord Murphy, a prospect and a draft pick to the expansion Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for goaltender Trevor Kidd.

With the first-year Thrashers Vasiljevs got a slightly longer look, playing seven games during the 1999-00 season and scoring his first NHL goal versus then-Colorado netminder Marc Denis. In 2000-01, Vasiljevs took a step toward regular NHL employment when he suited up for 21 games with the Thrashers. At year's end he became a free agent and signed on with the Vancouver Canucks.

With Vancouver, Vasiljevs found himself in a similar situation, as a depth player for the NHL club and a steady offensive player for the minor league team. In his time with the Canucks he chipped in some points and helped the team through an injury-plagued stretch that threatened their season. After spending the entire 2002-03 season in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose, Vasiljevs opted to join the Russian Elite League in 2003-04.

On the international stage, Vasiljevs has represented Latvia three times at the World Championships (2000, 2004 and 2005).
