Ben Hankinson stayed close to home for his college career. He played four years for the University of Minnesota, and was named to the first WCHA All-Star team in 1990. In 1991 he reported to the Utica Devils of the AHL, at that time the affiliate of the New Jersey Devils, the team that had drafted him in 1987. During the 1992-1993 season he made his first NHL appearance, playing four games for New Jersey and the balance of the season for Utica. 1993-94 saw him spending more time in a an NHL jersey, including a couple of playoff games, but again most of his time was spent in the minors. He was traded to Tampa Bay in March 1995 and played 18 games for the Lightening. He was traded to Detroit in August 1995, and played the following season for the AHL Adirondack Red Wings. He then moved on to the Grand Rapids Griffins, and retired as an Orlando Solar Bear after the 199-1998 season.

WCHA First All-Star Team (1990) Traded to Tampa Bay by New Jersey with Alexander Semak for Shawn Chambers and Danton Cole, March 14, 1995. Traded to Detroit by Tampa Bay with Marc Bergevin for Shawn Burr and Detroit's 3rd round pick (later traded to Boston - Boston selected Jason Doyle) in 1996 NHL Draft, August 17, 1995.
