Centre Steve Gotaas played parts of three seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars in the 80s and 90s. He was a top scorer in junior and the minors and also competed briefly in Europe.
Born in Camrose, Alberta. Gotaas was chosen 86th overall by the Pens in 1985 while he was in the midst of a fine career with the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL. He was returned to junior and scored 93 goals over his last two amateur seasons. Gotaas showed glimpses of potential while splitting the 1987-88 season between Pittsburgh and the IHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks. A few months later he was traded to the Minnesota North Stars where he was used chiefly as a farmhand.
After scoring 34 goals for the IHL's Kalamazoo Wings in 1991-92, Gotaas signed with Dusseldorfer EG of Germany. Before the end of the 1992-93 season he joined the Klangenfurter team of Austria. The veteran winger retired in 1994 after playing 39 games for the Las Vegas Thunder of the "I".
