Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Paul Gillis
Centre Paul Gillis played over 600 NHL games for three different franchises in the 80s and 90s. He was a gritty defensive player and a team leader who could also create scoring chances.

The Toronto native played junior B with the St.Michael's Buzzers before joining the Niagara Falls Flyers of the OHA. He was chosen 34th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in 1982 after scoring 89 points as the captain of his junior club. Gillis was returned to the OHL and remained with his junior club when it relocated to North Bay.

Gillis was a solid grinder as a rookie with the Nords in 1983-84. By the next season he was receiving more ice time from coach Michel Bergeron and was utilized on the penalty killing unit. Gillis' tenacious work helped Quebec reach the semifinals in 1985 and the next year he scored a career high 19 goals.

By the early 90s, Gillis had played through the decline of the franchise. Prior to the March deadline in 1991, he was traded to the Chicago Black Hawks where his gritty style suited coach Mike Keenan. The Hawks were deep at forward so by the next season he was dealt to the Hartford Whalers for future considerations. Gillis retired in 1993 after serving as a utility player and battling injuries for parts of two seasons.
