Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Randy Gilhen
Randy Gilhen was a defensive centre who played 457 games for seven different clubs in the 80s and 90s. In order to stick in the NHL he shifted from being an offensive player in junior to winning face offs and neutralizing the most dangerous scorers on the opposition.

Born in Zweibrucken, West Germany, Gilhen was taken 109th overall by the Hartford Whalers in 1982 after scoring a combined 41 goals for the Saskatoon Blades and Winnipeg Warriors of the WHL. He was returned for one last year of junior and registered 101 points for the Warriors.

During his first five pro seasons Gilhen played mostly in the minors. Along the way he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets who gave him his first full year of NHL work in 1988-89. After he was included in a multi-player deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins, he found an important niche as a checker on an offensively talented club. In 1990-91 he scored 15 goals then helped the Pens win their first Stanley Cup with his diligent defensive work. He later skated for the LA Kings, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Florida Panthers before rejoining Winnipeg for three seasons. He retired in 1998 after playing two years with the Manitoba Moose of the IHL.
