Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jim Cummins
Jim Cummins was selected in the fourth round, 67th overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers. A native of Dearborn, Michigan, Cummins began playing hockey at a young age and played Junior A hockey in Detroit. In 1988-89, he enrolled at Michigan State University and scored eleven points as a CCHA freshman. The following season, he improved to 15 points and in 1990-91, Cummins scored nine goals and 15 points.

In his first professional season with the Adirondack Red Wings, Cummins collected 338 minutes in penalties in 65 games. It was evident his role in professional hockey was to serve as enforcer. Adirondack went on to win the Calder Cup championship that season. He appeared in one game with the Detroit Red Wings, who had acquired his rights from the Rangers.

In the shortened 1994-95 season, Cummins was traded with Tom Tilley and Jeff Buchanan to the Chicago Blackhawks for Rich Sutter and Paul Ysebaert. He played 37 games between the two teams and helped the Hawks reach the Western Conference finals.

In 1997-98, Cummins was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes and in June 1999, he was traded again, this time to the Montreal Canadiens. On July 15, 2000, Cummins signed as a free agent with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks before joining the New York Islanders, a team with whom he would play only two games before calling it a career at the end of the 2001-02 season.

Following a year off, Cummins returned to the NHL in 2003-04, signing as a free-agent with the Colorado Avalanche.
