Forward Stephane Charbonneau grew up in the small town of Ste. Adele, Quebec and joined the Laval Laurentides Regents at the age of 16. In 42 games with the club, he scored 17 times while picking up 43 points. He joined the QMJHL's Hull Olympiques in 1987-88, and in 51 games, scored ten goals and 30 points in his rookie season. He followed that up with a 52-point season before being sent to the Shawinigan Cataractes for the 1989-90 season where he tallied 95 points, on 37 goals and 58 assists.
