Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Tim Bergland
Right-winger Tim Bergland was a defensive specialist who played nearly 200 NHL games in the early 1990s. He was known for going up and down his wing, forechecking, and staying with his man. His job often went unnoticed by the fans but was an important part of his team's success.

The native of Crookston, Minnesota starred at Lincoln High School in 1982-83. He was chosen 77th overall by the Washington Capitals at the 1983 Entry Draft before entering the University of Minnesota. Bergland was a solid checking forward for four years at one of the top hockey programs in the NCAA. He handled the jump to the pros well and even notched consecutive 20-goal seasons for the Caps' AHL farm team in 1988 and 1989.

Bergland was a useful role player and penalty killer for three seasons in Washington. His disciplined and unselfish play was sought by the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning when they assembled their first roster in 1992. Bergland split the 1992-93 season between the minors and the AHL but dressed for 51 games the next year when the Lightning was a particularly stingy opponent. Late that season, Tampa wanted to look at some other players and Bergland was picked up on waivers by the Capitals. He represented the U.S. at the 1995 World Championships and spent his last two pro seasons with the IHL's Chicago Wolves before retiring in 1996.
