Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Jesse Belanger
Centre Jesse Belanger was a decent offensive player for four different clubs in the 1990s. He possessed a natural touch around the net but often struggled to get to rebounds or shed the close checking of solid defensive clubs.

Born in St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec, Belanger scored 286 points in three years of junior with the QMJHL's Granby Bisons. After scoring 53 goals during his last year of junior he was signed as free agent by the Montreal Canadiens. He adjusted well to his first year of pro in 1991-92 with 30 goals for the AHL's Fredericton Canadiens. He dressed for 19 games in 1992-93 then played nine playoff games as the Habs won the Stanley Cup.

Montreal was fairly deep at centre with the likes of Kirk Muller, Guy Carbonneau, Stephane Lebeau, and veteran Ron Wilson so Belanger was left unprotected at the 1993 Expansion Draft. He was claimed by the Florida Panthers and scored 50 points as the team set a first year record with 83 points. Belanger followed up with 15 goals in 47 games during the Lockout-shortened season and equaled his personal high of 17 in 1995-96 before he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks late in the season.

Belanger played six games for the Edmonton Oilers after signing as a free agent but spent most of the next three years in the minors, save for a five-game stint with the Swiss club SC Herisau. In 1999-2000, he returned to the Habs' organization then signed with the New York Islanders as a free agent prior to the 2000-01 schedule. During this period the veteran winger toiled chiefly in the minors before returning to Switzerland with the HC La Chaux-de-Fonds.
