Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Derek Armstrong
Derek Armstrong was born April 23, 1973 in Ottawa, Ontario. The sixth round, 128th overall selection of the New York Islanders in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Armstrong is a graduate of the OHL's Sudbury Wolves.

A teammate of Michael Peca and Jamie Rivers in Sudbury, Armstrong played three seasons with the Wolves before making his professional debut with Islanders IHL affiliate in Utah in 1993-94. Armstrong split the first three seasons of his professional career with the Islanders, the IHL and the AHL before joining the Ottawa Senators for part of the 1997-98 season.

After signing as a free agent with Ottawa, the team used him only nine times before releasing him which turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the Ottawa, Ontario native.

An offensively gifted player, Armstrong joined the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack in 1998-99 and went on to spend the next three seasons splitting his time with the Wolf Pack and New York Rangers. Armstrong led Hartford to the 1999-00 Calder Cup Championship and his MVP performance was just what he needed to give him the confidence that he could take his game to that next level on a permanent basis.

However, the Rangers could not find any room for Armstrong on their roster and he decided in 2001-02 he needed a change of scenery. Armstrong went on to play one season in Bern, Switzerland before returning to North America in 2002-03. The Los Angeles Kings signed Armstrong in the summer of 2002 and upon his arrival proved to be a pleasant surprise on a club suffering from numerous injuries. In his first season with the club, Armstrong registered a respectable 38 points.

After spending a season in the Swiss League the Ottawa native returend to the Kigns for the 2005-06 season.
