Canada's victory assured it a place in history as the most dominant nation up to World War II. The Trail Smoke Eaters put on an overwhelming display, outscoring the opposition 42-1 in eight games as goalie Duke Scodellaro recorded seven shutouts. Although there were now 14 teams participating, Canada again had to defeat the United States in the finals to win gold. The final score, 4-0, was indicative both of Canada's superiority and the need for the Europeans to take the game more seriously if they ever hoped to compete with North American teams. The scores in Trail's other games included a 4-0 win over Poland to start the tournament and an 8-0 win over Holland in the last game of the first round. In the second round, Canada beat the Czechoslovaks 2-1, the Germans 9-0, and the British 4-0. Then, in the finals, Canada beat the Swiss 7-0 and the Czechoslovaks 4-0 before facing the Americans for gold.
