The only thing that comes close to winning the gold medal in men's Olympic ice hockey is following it up with a World Championship gold a few months later. That's exactly what the Swedes accomplished in Latvia, and since no national side had ever won the "double gold" in the same year, they put themselves into the history books as well.
Coached by Bengt-Ake Gustafsson, Sweden seemed to have a strategy of how to approach this year end event. Largely unimpressive through the first six games, they did what was necessary - qualify for the Playoff Round, where the real tournament began. The Swedes cranked it up a notch dispatching Team USA with ease and followed that up with "redemption" victory over Canada who had bettered them in two Gold Medal Games in recent years. So, despite the absence of big name stars in the lineup, Sweden completed its dream season Riga with a shutout win over the Czechs. A total of eight players lined up at the blueline to receive their second gold medal in a matter of months, namely Henrik Zetterberg, Jorgen Jonsson, Kenny Jonsson, Niklas Kronwall, Mika Hannula, Mikael Samuelsson, Ronnie Sundin and goaltender Stefan Liv.
