World Championships Photo In the absence of Canada and the United States, the Soviet Union easily won the gold medal, outscoring its five opponents by an unbelievable margin of 100-18 in 10 games. The tournament marked the first time since the European Championship in 1927 that the host nation won all of its games. Sweden, finished five points back of the Soviets and took home the silver medal while the bronze went to Czechoslovakia. Soviet centre Vladimir Petrov set an all-time record by scoring 18 goals and assisting on 16 for 34 points in 10 games. Swedish defenceman Borje Salming was selected to the tournament all-star team. Twenty-three years later he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame following an outstanding NHL career.
