Although the Soviet Union no longer iced stars like Sergei Makarov, Viacheslav Fetisov, Igor Larionov and Vladimir Krutov, a 22nd World Championship came their way at Bern in 1990. Losing to Sweden in the preliminary round, the USSR surrendered the European Championship to the Tre Kronor. However, when the same two teams met in the medal round, the new version of the "Big Red Machine" came out on top 3-0 with Latvian-born goalie Arturs Irbe recording the shutout. The Soviets also defeated Canada 7-1 and blanked Czechoslovakia 5-0 on another shutout by Irbe in the medal round. Sweden clinched the silver medal with a 6-4 victory over Canada on the final day and Czechoslovakia earned the bronze.
Although Canada failed to win a medal, Steve Yzerman was the tournament scoring champion with nine goals and 19 points in 10 games. Irbe was named the tournament's best goalie while Czechoslovakia's Dominik Hasek, who was also outstanding in net, was named to the tournament all-star team for the third straight year.
