Ten teams took part at the 1996 World Junior Championships in Boston (up from the traditional eight) and for the first time the teams were split into two groups. Canada finished with a 4-0 record to top Group A, then won its two playoff games, including a 4-1 victory over Sweden in the gold medal game. Canada's fourth straight tournament victory and ninth in all tied two records previously held by the former Soviet Union. Sweden settled for the silver medal, while Russia took the bronze. Canada got brilliant performances at the tournament from Jose Theodore, who was named the Best Goalie, and Jarome Iginla, who was the scoring leader with five goals and seven assists (Germany's Florian Keller also had 12 points) and was named the Best Forward. Honors as Best Defenseman went to Sweden's Mattias Ohlund.
