IIHF Men's Junior Under 20 World Hockey Championships
A unique situation occurred during the 1992 World Junior Championships in Fussen, Germany. The Soviet team started the tournament under the named of the Soviet Union, but due to the official break-up of the country on January 1, 1992, finished the tournament under the name of the Commonwealth of Independent States. However, political upheaval did not prevent the hockey team from winning the title for the ninth time. Ten players from the winning team had great NHL careers ahead of them, while another five players would also make the NHL. Sweden earned the silver medal, as Swedish players ranked 1-2-3-4 atop the tournament's scoring list. Michael Nylander led the way with 17 points and was chosen as the Best Forward. Peter Forsberg (11 points) Markus Naslund (10) and Mikael Renberg (10) rounded out the top four scoring positions. American Mike Dunham was named the Best Goalie after leading the United States to a bronze medal. Canada's Scott Niedermayer was selected as the Best Defenseman, although the two-time defending champion Canadians plummeted to sixth place at the tournament.
