After failing to win gold on home ice in 1988, the Soviet Union got revenge at the World Junior Championships in Anchorage, Alaska in 1989. With a gold medal on the line on the last day of the tournament, the Soviets crushed Canada 7-2. The line of Pavel Bure, Sergei Fedorov (one goal) and Alexander Mogilny (three goals) was unstoppable against Team Canada and the win handed the title to the Soviet junior team. Canada fell into fourth place behind Sweden (silver) and Czechoslovakia (bronze). The United States could finish no better than fifth despite the fact that Jeremy Roenick (16 points) and Mike Modano (15) finished first and second in tournament scoring. Still, Pavel Bure (eight goals, six assists) was named the Best Forward, while teammate Alexei Ivashkin was the Best Goalie. Rickard Persson of Sweden was selected as the Best Defenseman.
