IIHF Men's Junior Under 20 World Hockey Championships
The 1979 World Junior Championships in Karlstad, Sweden, brought together a lot of future international and NHL stars. Soviets Alexei Kasatonov, Vladimir Krutov and Igor Larionov, Canadians Brian Propp and Brad McCrimmon, Americans Mike Ramsey, Neal Broten and Dave Christian, Finns Reijo Ruotsalainen and Jari Kurri, Swedes Pelle Lindbergh, Tomas Jonsson, Mats Naslund, Hakan Loob and Thomas Steen and Czechoslovakians Anton Stastny, Darius Rusnak, Jiri Lala, Dusan Pasek and Igor Liba all showed the promise great future careers. The Soviet Union made it three straight championships (and six in a row dating back to 1974) this year, with the Czechoslovakians taking the silver and the host Swedes the bronze. Canada tumbled into fifth place behind Finland. Vladimir Krutov of the USSR was the tournament's top scorer with eight goals and six assists and was named the Best Forward while Soviet teammate Alexei Kasatonov was the Best Defenseman. Best Goalie honors went to Pelle Lindbergh.
